For almost 800 years, Francis of Assisi has been one of the most venerated saints of the Catholic Church. With his consistent following of Christ and his radical ideal of poverty, he fascinated people even during his lifetime and triggered a great movement that decisively changed the face of the medieval church and society. In the 20th century, he then advanced to become a novel hero, a dropout and the first "eco-apostle". And in 2013, even a pope chose his name, placing his pontificate under the patronage of the saint.

The exhibition thus brings together many high-calibre loans, primarily from Italian museums, each of which represents central moments in the saint's pictorial and veneration history. The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive and richly illustrated catalogue that combines art historical contributions with very personal views of the saint and takes us to the original sites of his work in poetic images.
