Rosa Brunner. Field research
Collection intervention

The quarries from which this unique stone is extracted revealed themselves to Rosa Brunner as fascinating places of great significance - surgical cuts into the anatomy of contemporary history. In her art project, she reveals the identity and diversity of these quarries. Conceived as a long-term project, the exhibition now presents the first station, the Hermannsberg quarry near Sand am Main.
Surrounded by forests and vineyards, the Hermannsberg quarry is picturesquely situated in the Franconian stratified plain and has a centuries-old history. The Sander reed sandstone, a fine- to medium-grained, olive-green sedimentary rock, is quarried there and has already served as the basis for sculptures such as the Bamberg Rider or the Prince's Portal. An excellent sculpture material, homogeneous and fine-grained - but also fragile and sensitive to environmental and weathering influences. Nowadays, quarrying is only carried out as needed, creating valuable natural spaces for endangered plants and animals during the resting periods.
Rosa Brunner was particularly fascinated by the piles of stones in the overburden, where tonnes seem to balance in suspension. For her, these fragile tipping points reflect the feeling of our time. With her intervention in the exhibition "Love or Burden?! Baustelle Denkmal", Rosa Brunner impressively immerses us in the world of the Sander reed sandstone and its history.
