"God seems to have an exaggerated preference for beetles," evolutionary biologist John Haldane is said to have replied when a theologian asked him what creation tells us about its author. The background to this is that beetles, with 380,000 known species, are something like the successful model of evolution. There is also hardly any plant or animal material that is not eaten by some kind of beetle and, with the exception of the oceans, they have conquered every conceivable habitat.
Reason enough to dedicate a small but fine special exhibition to these animals. From 21 July, the Museum Mensch und Natur (Museum Man and Nature) will therefore be showing in its small special exhibition area a total of 17 large-format photographs of beetles taken by the Augsburg photographer Thomas Büchsemann with the help of special photographic techniques in the Augsburg Museum of Natural History. They have an extreme depth of field and resolution that make it possible to show the animals in umpteen-fold magnification, so that even the finest details are recognisable.
To get a feel for the size of the original beetles, a specimen of the same species from the Zoologische Staatssammlung Munich (State Zoological Collection Munich) is shown next to each picture.
