As ancient art in miniature, gems have always exerted a great fascination. They served - mostly set in rings - not only as fashion accessories and status symbols, but also to seal documents, to protect against evil forces or as gifts of love.

Antique gems often end up in public and private collections without any concrete indication of their origin. The special exhibition, however, presents specimens from the Archäologische Staatssammlung (State Archaeological Collection) for which the Bavarian place of discovery and usually even their archaeological context are known. In this way, they can provide information about life in the Roman provinces on the territory of present-day Bavaria.
