Death and the dance of death - Horst Meister
From Regensburg to today
23.09.2023 - 12.11.2023 ,
Städtische Galerie im Leeren Beutel (Municipal Gallery in the Empty Bag)
The Dance of Death is a centuries-old theme in European art history. Many artists have explored it. Horst Meister, who studied under HAP Grieshaber at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Karlsruhe from 1956 to 1961 and lived in Regensburg with his wife, Almut Grytzmann, from 1975 to 1981, is one of them. This time in Regensburg was absolutely formative, as the painter and graphic artist found his way back to his art here after having worked as a stage designer for several years.
The exhibition includes the graphic cycles "German Dance of Death" and "Schwandorf Dance of Death". In the latter, Meister deals with the events surrounding the planned reprocessing plant for nuclear fuel rods in Wackersdorf, or WAA for short, in the 1980s. In all these works, he dissects the social and political sensitivities in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as general world events. The exhibition also includes recent works on canvas, which, for example, thematise the war in Ukraine.
