In the Rotunda of the Pinakothek of Modern Art (Pinakothek der Moderne), Chilean-born, New York-based artist, architect and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar demonstrates why he is considered one of the most culturally, politically and socially engaged visual artists of our time. The late Okwui Enwezor wrote: "Alfredo Jaar's work represents one of the most engaged of any contemporary artist, blatantly addressing the structural link between ethics and aesthetics, art and politics". The artist explores complex socio-political issues and foregrounds the ethics of representation. In his silent and meditative works, Jaar tackles issues of great consequence, bearing witness to humanitarian catastrophes and highlighting the effects of military conflicts, political corruption and economic inequality around the world.
And once again, Alfredo Jaar will address a pressing issue of our time by responding to the current debate on naturalisation in Germany and a world with growing global inequalities. In the central rotunda, he will present an installation that focuses on German and European immigration policy, citizenship and identity, in the face of a growing refugee crisis due to climate change and ongoing conflicts - exacerbated by the war in Ukraine - and, as a result, unequal treatment of refugees.
