Hans Platschek. Falls from hell, cockfights, nice evenings
17.03.2023 - 11.06.2023 ,
Kunsthalle Schweinfurt (Schweinfurt Art Gallery)
The comprehensive retrospective presents a current look at the oeuvre of the sharp-tongued author and painter Hans Platschek (1923-2000) to mark his 100th birthday.
"...and then in the evening we roast ourselves a Tachist and drink red wine with it," he wrote in a letter dated 16 September 1957 after returning from exile. "Tachists" refers to artists of informal painting, which Platschek, who himself often ascribed to Art Informel, initially advocated overcoming in his writings, only to then offend his audience with a change of style.
The exhibition with high-calibre loans not only traces Platschek's development as a painter and pays tribute to his role as an artist, author and critic, but also integrates him into the environment he himself "described" in texts with works by Wols, Asger Jorn, Jacqueline de Jong and SPUR through to Konrad Klapheck and Werner Büttner, among others.
