The photographer and cameraman Valentin Schwab (1948-2012) from Unterfranken is unjustly one of the great unknowns in the history of German photography. Since his student days at the Gesamthochschule Kassel in the 1970s, he worked as a cameraman in the crisis areas of the world; the photographs taken there in parallel already show the committed attitude and quality of the photographic gaze that characterizes his life's work. From the beginning, however, Schwab was also drawn back again and again to his Franconian homeland, which was undergoing major changes as a result of structural change and land consolidation. Rural life, as it had been familiar to him from his childhood, the Franconian village and the landscape were increasingly disappearing and giving way, especially in the villages, to anonymized, standardized cheap construction. These observations gave rise to Valentin Schwab's life's work, which he later subsumed under the title "Land": capturing the people and the land, documenting the changes, preserving what has passed away and questioning current developments.
