Ernst Barlach

Man as an enigmatic being

22.10.2023 - 28.01.2024 ,
Museum Lothar Fischer (Museum Lothar Fischer)

The reason for the exhibition is to focus on the work and impact of the famous sculptor in the wake of his 150th birthday and at the same time to introduce the Hamburg Stiftermuseum. The focus of the show is Barlach's famous "Frieze of Eavesdroppers" from 1930-1935, which enters into an exciting dialogue with Lothar Fischer's "Enigma Variations" from 1996/1997. Both series of figures are oriented towards the human form in their depiction. The retrospective exhibition is enriched not only by drawings and sculptures thematically related to the frieze, but also by selected unique bronze pieces. They, too, show the great expressionist sculptor's lifelong preoccupation with the image of man and what it means to be human: with the "enigmatic human being".
