Rachel Maclean. Duck

01.04.2023 - 02.07.2023 ,
Kunstpalais Erlangen (Erlangen Art Palace)

"Relax - none of this is real". The works of the multimedia artist Rachel Maclean (*1987, Edinburgh, Scotland) captivate with elaborately produced virtual reality, extravagant costumes and garish fantasy worlds. With "Duck" she now presents her latest video work at the Kunstpalais. For the film, produced in collaboration with the Kunstpalais, Maclean uses so-called deepfake technologies for the first time. By means of "face swapping", the artist, who plays all the roles in her films herself, exchanges her face and voice with the figures of Sean Connery, in his role of the British secret agent James Bond, and the Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe.

In the film Duck, both the British spy and the viewer find themselves in a surreal, ever-disintegrating reality in which the fixed definition of identity and the trustworthiness of history and news are questioned - or even turned on their heads. Together with new paintings by the artist, the video work is shown in a multi-room installation that takes visitors into the world of the British secret service.
