When Albert Speer was released from twenty years‘ internment at the prison for war criminals in Spandau, Berlin, he was in the public spotlight for many years. As a charming and seemingly reformed contemporary witness, he became a media star. During National Socialism, Speer was a leading architect and, as Reich Armaments Minister, a key player in the regime. His residence and studio were located on Obersalzberg, in the off-limits area. As a close confidant of Adolf Hitler, Speer and his family were welcome guests at the Berghof, Hitler‘s house on Obersalzberg. After his release from prison, Speer successfully spread his legend of the innocent technocrat: He had known nothing of the Nazi crimes and, seduced by Hitler‘s aura, had become involved in the war through no fault of his own. The focus of this exhibition is on the question of why Speer‘s legend found such great resonance within the Federal Republic of Germany across so many decades - even after many of his stories had long been refuted by historical research.
