Warwick Freeman (born 1953 in Nelson, Aotearoa/New Zealand) is regarded worldwide as one of the most influential contemporary jewellery artists of our time. Over five decades, the New Zealand artist has created a lexicon for the world of signs around us - from the cultural symbolism of the hook and the star to the heart crafted from the cinders of the volcanic island of Rangitoto, an island just off the coast of Auckland. His works sensitively tell of the culture and history of Aotearoa/New Zealand. In New Zealand, it is said that if you wear a piece of Warwick Freeman's jewellery, it conveys something of who you are as a New Zealander and how you have lived. Freeman has never tired of searching for the right answers for contemporary jewellery in Aotearoa/New Zealand against this background.
