Die Neue Sammlung is showing an installation by Ngozi-Omeje Ezema (*1979) for the first time in Germany. The Nigerian ceramicist represents a new generation of African artists who are transporting an ancient traditional art form into the present day.
Drawing on her personal experiences, her works make reference to themes such as identity, family and the female body. She is often inspired by forms and materials from the natural environment as well as other found materials.

Using transparent nylon string, hundreds of ceramic fragments are strung together at specific heights and positions to simulate vases of different shapes and sizes. For Ngozi-Omeje Ezema, the use of strings represents life in balance, while the fragments refer to the fragility of this life.
Looking at her hanging objects with their metaphorical connotations and symbolic meanings, our experience and understanding of what a vase is and what function it fulfils is radically questioned. The artist, who trained and teaches at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, deliberately plays with the viewer's perception.
