Almost a tonne: Breathing space

The group exhibition ‘Almost a Tonne. Breathing Space’ explores breathing as both the origin and the limit of existence through artistic interventions. Every inhalation is a beginning; every exhalation a letting go. Contemporary female artists from Bavaria make this invisible process tangible in various ways. Breath becomes a space for thought, in which body and world, inside and outside, self and other ceaselessly merge into one another. Breath is an eternal symbol of spirit and soul. The ancient gods used it to bring Pygmalion’s sculpture Galatea to life; in the story of creation, too, God breathed the breath of life into humankind; and Buddha also used breath to attain enlightenment through meditation. Breath is also a metaphor for transience, life and death – for it can cease. But how can something so fleeting and ethereal be depicted?
