In 2024, 'Being in-between' provides the conceptual superstructure for nine short, individual artistic presentations that explore the theme in its various aspects. Being in-between can be a thought, a state or even a feeling. We want to understand being in-between as a possibility to see more and to grasp different perspectives simultaneously.
"Hollowed out and surrounded by darkness, the smell of earth in my nose, I light a fire. My root hands grow deep, while my mind wanders through vast spaces and times to the source (don't we all come from a cave?). It pushes me out and I get to know day and night, the rain and the energy of the sun. I grow leaves, flowers and fruit until everything withers and I return to the darkness, ready for the next cycle." Judith Egger
Judith Egger (*1973) lives and works in Munich. Egger trained as a wood carver in Oberammergau and studied communication design at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences and the Royal College of Art in London. Uncontrolled organic growth, parasitic organisms and radical transformation processes are among her areas of research - since 2004, as director of the Parasitic Institute for Hybridity and Empirical Threshold Research, she has been researching the life force that drives everything, the swelling force that is inherent in every organism and that humans ultimately cannot control. She advocates a new relationship with all living things that is not characterised by dominance, separation and subjugation, but by the knowledge of interdependence and deep interconnectedness. She prefers to work in the border areas of visual art, installation and performance. In Dazwischensein 8, Judith Egger will build on her video performance series 'Transmissions'. Having made performative contact with plants, animals, water and wind since 2018, she is now turning her attention to the element of fire. The power of fire stands for radical transformation, for a maximum in-between and it is precisely this process that she wants to explore artistically (without burning).
Interviewer: Thorsten Nolting (*1964) studied theology and works as a pastor, publicist and exhibition organiser. He taught philosophy in the graphic design department at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences and was spokesman of the board of Diakonie München und Oberbayern until 2022. Nolting is currently Managing Director of Bethel im Norden and editor of the magazine Kunst und Kirche - Magazin für Kritik, Ästhetik und Religion.
Fabian Hesse (*1980 in Augsburg) is an interdisciplinary artist working with digital fabrication. In his practice, Hesse focuses on the tech-knowledge of digital production and material transformations in the course of technological change. He uses 3D printing, modelling processes and algorithms to create abstract sculptures, performative situations, scores and experimental workshop formats. Under the name Hesse & Wakil, he works closely with Mitra Wakil (*1975 in Kabul/Afghanistan). In his experimental formats, Hesse explores new approaches to social, material and structural changes in society in the wake of the rapid development of technology. He uses the possibilities of technologies and materials to investigate the effects of the digitalisation process on art and society. In doing so, he reflects on topics such as human-machine interaction, copy, glitch, visualisation and the concealment of information. From 2014 to 2016, Hesse was curator at Lothringer13_Florida in Munich. From 2018 to 2020, Hesse held a teaching position at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste HFBK, and since 2020 he has been a professor at the HGB Leipzig.
