In 2024, 'Being in-between' provides the conceptual superstructure for nine short, individual artistic presentations that explore the theme in its various aspects. Being in-between can be a thought, a state or even a feeling. We want to understand being in-between as a possibility to see more and to grasp different perspectives simultaneously.
Manuela Illera (*1988 in Bogotá, Colombia) lives and works in Munich. She studied painting in Buenos Aires and fine arts at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Prof Julian Rosefeldt until 2023. Illera's works are closely interwoven with her feminist practice, which is characterised by the migrant perspective. Her interdisciplinary work deals with time-based media and the combination of sound and performing arts. She deals with themes such as decoloniality, queerness, the body and subversive identities. Her music, films, collective works, social projects and experiential designs explore the role of whiteness, capitalism and patriarchal social conformity in society. Illera is co-founder of the band 'Cosmica Bandida', co-director of the decolonial music festival 'La Retornona' in Bogotá and produces the feminist podcast 'Extravagant Mortals'. Her exhibitions and performances have been shown internationally, including in Berlin, Milan, Barcelona, Paris, Vienna, Bogotá and Buenos Aires.
Interviewer: Atabey Mamasita (b. Carlos Maria Romero *1979) is an artist and curator with a focus on cultural heritage practices relevant to historically marginalised communities and social cohesion. Among other things, Atabey was co-curator at the Museu de Arte do Rio in Rio de Janeiro and curator of the Contemporary Dance University Festival in Bogotá. Atabey is currently curator for Performative Practices at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.
Philipp Gufler (*1989 in Augsburg) lives in Amsterdam and Munich and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Philipp Gufler combines various media in his artistic work. These include screen prints on fabric and mirrors, artist books, performances and videos. In the 'Quilts' series of works, the artist makes reference to artists, writers, magazines and lost queer spaces. In addition, the human body and AIDS play an important role in his artworks, for example in the video installations 'The Responsive Body' or 'Becoming-Rabe'. He has had solo exhibitions at Kunstverein Göttingen, Françoise Heitsch, Munich, BQ, Berlin and Kevin Space, Vienna, as well as group exhibitions at Haus der Kunst, Munich, Centraal Museum, Utrecht and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. In 2015 he received the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize, in 2020 the Media Prize of the German AIDS Foundation and in 2021 the Dutch Royal Award for Painting. He is an active member of the self-organised Forum Queeres Archiv München.
