Laurie Simmons. Dollhouse Photographs

The American artist Laurie Simmons is known for her staged photographs, in which she presents dolls in stereotypical female roles within domestic interiors. A prime example of her work is the series “In and Around the House”, created in 1978/79, comprising 56 black-and-white photographs in which a female doll is shown performing various activities in her cosy doll’s home. Yet the idyll is deceptive, for hidden stories unfold behind the bourgeois façade. The exhibition “Laurie Simmons. Dollhouse Photographs”, organised in collaboration with the Goetz Collection, the German Theatre Museum and the Munich Film Festival, presents a selection of her works that critically reflect on social role models within the American middle class.
