Paulusbrunn
The second life of a vanished village

Deutsches Knopfmuseum (German Button Museum)
The German Button Museum in Bärnau is reopening its doors after the winter break and kicking off the new season with the year’s first exhibition at the Punktum Gallery. Last year, this venue established itself as a place where diverse perspectives converge – history, art, research and contemporary approaches.
The exhibition “Paulusbrunn – The Second Life of a Vanished Village” is one of the first projects to take up this idea. It brings together projects, people and initiatives that have engaged with the memory of this place in recent years.
On display are historical materials, eyewitness accounts, artistic interpretations and innovative approaches – including a virtual reality project.
At the same time, the exhibition is intended as a tribute to all those who have been committed to preserving the memory of Paulusbrunn for years. It makes it clear that memory is not merely a glimpse into the past, but a living process that opens up new connections and facilitates dialogue between the past, present and future.
The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on what remains when a place disappears – and how memory can become the foundation for new understanding and future cooperation across borders.
The exhibition concept is based on three levels:
• History, which makes the life and disappearance of the village comprehensible,
• Interpretation, which shows how its history is told today,
• Innovation, which opens up new ways of experiencing and understanding the past.
