Sand in my eyes
Sudanese Moments. Literary photo exhibition by Enikö Nagy
22.03.2024 - 15.09.2024 ,
Deutsches Hirtenmuseum (German Shepherd Museum)
The prevailing image of Africa is one of poverty and crises in conflict-ridden countries - a one-sided narrative of people who are poor and need help. However, says Enikő Nagy, this view jeopardises the cultural heritage of African and other peoples.
Using photography and oral literature from Sudan, she challenges this paradigm. Her book SAND IN MY EYES - Sudanese Moments, an artistic study of immaterial culture from Sudan, is an encounter at eye level with other cultures and offers cultural resistance.
The travelling exhibition of images and texts from the book has already been shown in Munich, Berlin, Madrid, London, Budapest, Bucharest, Khartoum, Rome and the Palace of Nations (UN) in Geneva and has attracted over 50,000 visitors.
Now the well-travelled exhibition can also be seen in Franconia, at the Deutsches Hirtenmuseum (German Shepherd Museum) in Hersbruck. A fitting location, as artefacts from the nomads, farmers, mountain and desert dwellers of Africa are also on display here in the international section of the permanent exhibition.
