The Archäologische Staatssammlung (State Archaeological Collection) is dedicated to the archaeological heritage of Bavaria with the free special exhibition "Antiquity in Bavaria".
Bavaria today is characterised by a wide variety of cultural influences. Celts have lived here since the Iron Age. The Romans established their provinces around the birth of Christ. Even after their departure, the enthusiasm for the Mediterranean lifestyle remained. Today, Etruscan, Greek and Egyptian art complement the large Bavarian collections of antiquities.
The special exhibition introduces the museum network of the same name to the public.
You can discover high-quality replicas of archaeological finds: from jewellery and ceramics to sculptures and reliefs to the discharge certificate of a Roman soldier. The highlight is a bronze horse's head from the Roman provincial capital of Augusta Vindelicum, today's Augsburg. Banners and atmospheric impressions provide information about the diverse
contents of the eight participating museums and parks. In addition, a reading corner invites visitors to browse through various books and catalogues.
Founded in 2019, the "Antiquity in Bavaria" museum network emerged from the "Museum & Tourism" project
Tourism" project, which was launched by the Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen in Bayern (State Office for the Non-State Museums in Bavaria) and Bayern Tourismus Marketing GmbH. The aim is to better present the participating museums in the network to tourists. This is achieved by developing specific offers for holidaymakers and tourism providers, mainly in digital form, but also partly in analogue form, such as the special exhibition "Antiquity in Bavaria".
