Put in the spotlight - women in Burghausen
In 1025, Empress Dowager Kunigunde intended to give Burghausen to the Archbishop of Salzburg. The document, written a thousand years ago, contains the first written mention of Burghausen - the reason for a unique special exhibition.
Kunigunde stands out from her time as a particularly skilful politician who acted on an equal footing with her husband, Emperor Henry II. However, she was by no means the only woman to have left her mark on Burghausen. The Duchesses of Bavaria-Landshut resided in the castle, and in the town, women made a living as workers, citizens and mothers. Sisters of the English Fräulein brought education to Burghausen, and women went their own way as teachers, artists and activists. The quest for equal rights and self-determination marked the beginning of a new era.
1000 years of Burghausen also means 1000 years of Burghausen women's history. Away from the history of famous men, the special exhibition Ins Ins Licht gerückt - Frauen in Burghausen in the Burghausen Town Museum uses various female protagonists to show how women have lived, suffered and worked in Burghausen over the past 1000 years, and what hopes and concerns moved them.
In the first four weeks after the opening, the original document with Burghausen's first mention can be seen in the exhibition from 6 June to 3 July.
