The writer and cabaret artist Joachim Ringelnatz is one of the best-known literary figures of the Weimar Republic. To this day, his whimsical, sometimes unsettling poems and texts continue to shape the cultural landscape of the 1920s in Germany. For him, literature no longer exists solely between the covers of a book, but takes to the stage of entertainment alongside him. At the artists’ pub Alter Simpl on Munich’s Türkenstraße, he enjoyed great success as the house poet before the First World War. However, the fact that the visual arts also played an important role in Ringelnatz’s work was forgotten after 1933. The first exhibition of his paintings in 1923 at Alfred Flechtheim’s renowned gallery in Berlin marked the poet’s breakthrough as a painter. The following year, his paintings were exhibited alongside works by Otto Dix and George Grosz.
