At the turn of the year 1777/78, Elector Karl Theodor from the Palatinate line of the Wittelsbach dynasty took over the rule of Bavaria. The new sovereign rendered numerous services to the political and economic modernisation of his inherited territories and initiated social reforms and cultural innovations. At the same time, however, his plans to exchange Bavaria for the Austrian Netherlands and his rigid style of leadership robbed him of the sympathy of his Bavarian subjects.

To mark the 300th anniversary of his birth, works of art and cultural-historical artefacts, including a spectacular new acquisition, take a look at Karl Theodor's reign in Munich from 1777 to 1799.
