Ship-shaped drinking vessels and centrepieces are among the most extraordinary creations of the goldsmith's art around 1600, telling the story of courtly and patrician dining culture as well as shipbuilding and seafaring in splendid detail. They are symbols of a time of early globalisation and colonisation. With magnificent works of craftsmanship, paintings, prints, precious manuscripts, maps and navigational instruments, the exhibition shows the most common types of ships and the most sought-after trade goods.
