Which came first - the pedestrian zone or street music? The phenomenon of making music for small donations has existed throughout Europe since the early Middle Ages. They stood on the fringes of society and yet were needed on certain occasions.
The studio exhibition presents instruments of travelling musicians, such as bag pipes, hurdy-gurdies, a hammered dulcimer, a cittern of travelling miners and mechanical instruments from the field of barrel organs, together with pictorial sources ranging from elaborately painted fans to figurines and embossed tokens. It sheds light on a subject whose historical dimension few people are aware of when listening to street music during a stroll through the city.
