Most of the objects in the Bavarian Army Museum are not on display, but are stored in various depots. In order to prepare the next exhibitions, the curators examine the collections according to certain criteria. Among the 500,000 or so exhibits, there are always pieces that appear puzzling at first glance. Other objects are completely unidentifiable to the layman, are only revealed through more extensive explanations or cannot even be categorised by the museum staff.
The exhibition therefore brings together a wide variety of pieces from the museum's extensive collections under the heading "Enigmatic". Unusual, difficult to explain or even unidentifiable objects can be found in almost all areas. For example, a copy of the Enigma encryption machine stands next to a type of hatchet that was not intended to injure or even kill anyone. What was it used for?
There is a "Luntenberger" as well as a "Putzer", a "Pulverprüfer" or a "Francisca". What is it? Let yourself be surprised and join in the guessing: Because although the exhibition provides answers, it invites you to guess what it might be first.
The exhibition was curated by Dr Tobias Schönauer (Head Conservator) and Messalina Mayer (Research Volunteer).
