There is no colour that polarises so much and is so little associated with the military as the colour pink. Today, pink (or rose) is almost exclusively associated with femininity. In contrast, blue, green and beige tones as well as black are perceived as military colours. Nevertheless, there are objects in the Bavarian Army Museum's collection that document that pink and rose are indeed colours that were and are worn as weapon colours.
This small cabinet exhibition presents objects from three hundred years of military history from almost all areas of the collection: From uniform items and medals to memorabilia, posters and printed matter. They raise a number of questions: Why is pink a weapon colour? What actually is pink? And what is pink? What is the significance of pink? Can a change in the meaning of the colour(s) be traced in the objects?
The title of the presentation is ambiguous: "pink" means the colour "rose" in English. In German, a change has taken place since the 1970s and pink and rose have developed into two separate colour terms. In (historical) sources on uniforms, the colour "pink" is often used. A look at the material evidence shows that "pink" is an inadequate description of the bright colour(s).
With the new exhibition format "Cabinet Pieces", the Bavarian Army Museum opens up its extensive collections and provides new insights. At regular intervals, the curators pick out specific themes that go beyond the permanent exhibitions.
