The buildings of the fortifications have shaped and characterised the cityscape of Ingolstadt for almost half a millennium. Together with the fortifications of the medieval city wall and the New Castle, they even cover a period of over 600 years.
The profound changes to the cityscape caused by the fortifications are clearly visible in Ingolstadt's townscape. Sometimes they are only viewed negatively as the remnants of a warlike and brutal past. This often forgets the protection that these fortifications offered the population, the fortress garrison and, not least, refugees. The fortifications are therefore neither good nor bad.
Today, this great historical legacy raises a number of questions that urban society and urban planning need to address:
How did and does the city of Ingolstadt deal with this historical legacy of fortifications?
What do the fortifications mean for a modern city in the heart of Bavaria?
What opportunities do they offer?
What difficulties do they pose?
How can they be utilised, what solutions have been found?
How should the tension between ecology/nature and fortress be assessed?
Are the fortress buildings just a spectacular backdrop for events such as concerts, theatre performances and readings? Or are they much more than that?
The exhibition aims to explore these and other questions using photographs by the well-known photographer Erich Reisinger and thus also indirectly shed light on the question of Ingolstadt's city identity from a different angle - namely with regard to the fortifications, which have shaped the city far more and much more sustainably than many other aspects of Ingolstadt's history.
The exhibition was curated by the Stadtidentität group
Erich Reisinger (photographer)
Dr Tobias Schönauer (local history curator for the city of Ingolstadt, Bavarian Army Museum)
Maximilian Schuster (Ingolstadt Fortress Association)
Dr Matthias Schickel (Ingolstadt Historical Society, City Councillor)
Christian Lange (City Councillor)
