The exhibition shows artistic perspectives on people in the military and war in the early modern period. A selection of paintings and prints from the rich collection of the Bayerisches Armeemuseum (Bavarian Army Museum), most of which have never been exhibited before, will be on display.
The exhibition opens with a number of paintings from the 19th century, some of which are large-format. They show the historicist view of the soldiers of the past, which still influences our ideas today. Portraits of officers and soldiers from the period between 1650 and 1820 can be seen in the central room. They show how the people portrayed wanted or should have been seen. In the adjoining rooms, scenes of soldiers' lives and war are presented as they were imagined by contemporary artists.
