Gabriele Schwarz was born in Marktoberdorf in 1937 to a baptised Jewish mother and experienced a carefree childhood in a rural idyll in the care of loving foster parents.
When racist ideology and state-fuelled hatred against Jews increased dramatically, her biological mother tried in vain to save herself and Gabi abroad.
In 1943, the girl was forced to leave her homeland and was deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp.
The travelling exhibition "Beloved Gabi. A girl from the Allgäu - murdered in Auschwitz" is based on the research of historian, author and filmmaker Leo Hiemer, who spent decades investigating the fate of the girl. The exhibition was conceived by curator Regina Gropper.
Numerous photographs, toys and items of clothing provide an insight into Gabi's life. Audio and video stations with statements from contemporary witnesses deepen the exploration of Gabi's fate.
