The first gymnastics club was founded in Bruck in 1885 under the motto "Fresh - Pious - Happy - Free". Further gymnastics clubs were founded in the 1920s. And the first football clubs were formed.

However, the spectrum of the sports movement, which was mainly organised in clubs, was broad: it ranged from marksmen to cyclists to horse riders, from curling to motorised flying. As workers' leisure time increased towards the end of the 19th century, sport increasingly became a leisure activity for a broad section of the population.
