Künstlerhaus Geiger - die Bax (Artist house Geiger - the Bax)
07.07.2024 - 08.09.2024 ,
Archiv Geiger (Archive Geiger)
7th exhibition at Künstlerhaus Geiger - die Bax (Artist house Geiger - the Bax) on Lake Chiemsee.
Artist friends in the Bax: Walter Brendel, Rupprecht Geiger, Willi Geiger, Fritz Harnest and Walter Lederer.
For Willi Geiger and his son Rupprecht, the Bax is a second home, where they receive many visitors from Munich and further afield under the pear tree in the large garden. They also maintain lively contact with the locals and in particular with some artists from Feldwies, a district of Übersee. Highlights are Willi's birthdays and the memorable celebrations that go with them in the barn of the old farmhouse, which has not yet been remodelled, as well as the many evenings at the Chiemgauhof as the sun sets by the water.
Three artists - Walter Brendel (1923-2013), Fritz Harnest (1905-1999) and Walter Lederer (1923-2003) - stand out here and deep friendships develop with them, resulting in a stimulating exchange of artistic ideas and joint projects. Their mutual appreciation is reflected in the many works of art by these three artists that hang in the Bax. The estates of the three artist friends from Feldwies also contain numerous donated or purchased works by Willi and Rupprecht Geiger, most of them by the latter.
To mark the 20th anniversary, the seventh summer exhibition at Künstlerhaus Geiger - die Bax (Artist house Geiger - the Bax), curated by Julia Geiger, presents a selection of these works. While the so-called "Stübi" is dedicated to the history of the Bax and Willi Geiger's connection to this house and the surrounding landscape, photos, correspondence and colourful birthday greetings are exhibited in the parlour, shedding light on the close friendship between the five exhibited artists.
In the barn, the fantastic mask wall by Willi and Rupprecht Geiger sets the scene. On display are examples of works by the five friends that refer to each other in terms of motif or colour. It is not only the material paintings made from assembled found objects that play an important role, but also the path to abstraction in the first post-war years or the preoccupation with the colour red.
