The Neue Pinakothek (New Pinacotheca) has an extensive collection of 19th century photographs from Italy. The motifs are mostly landscapes and architectural monuments from Venice to Naples. However, people also played an important role very early on - as individuals or as representatives of a particular social class.

From the middle of the 19th century, portrait photography made a decisive contribution to the establishment of the new medium. Photographic portraits were usually produced in carte-de-visite format and were thus affordable for a broad range of buyers. In small albums, people not only collected photographs of their own family and circle of friends, but also of famous personalities from contemporary history.
