The sculptor Hans Wimmer (1907–1992) worked within the tradition of figurative sculpture of the early decades of the 20th century and, as a representative of the so-called Munich School of Sculpture, played a decisive role in shaping the development of sculpture in Germany during this period. Through the human figure, animals, portraits and large-scale sculptures, he explored the themes central to his work: the form and shape of the figure, the function of movement, and the cube and space.
On the latter, Wimmer, then a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and a participant in documenta I, wrote: “Do not start from the contour, but from the volume. Practise and cultivate your conception of volume. Consult the contour only to control the volume.”
