Special exhibition to mark Melchior Schedler’s 90th birthday
To mark his 90th birthday, the Oberammergau Museum is dedicating its first ever special exhibition to the artist, author and dramaturge Melchior Schedler, featuring a selection of paintings, drawings and objects. Schedler has donated a large part of his work to the museum; supplemented by items on loan from private collections, the exhibition offers a comprehensive insight into his visual art.
The focus is on the colour-rich oil paintings and material collages created since he turned sixty. Schedler’s works follow in the tradition of Surrealism and combine autobiographical experiences, literary allusions and social reflections to create multi-layered visual worlds.
Born in Oberammergau in 1936, Schedler was influenced by the theatre from an early age. After studying at the Munich Academy of Stage Arts, he worked as a set designer, dramaturg and author at venues including the Munich Kammerspiele. He gained national recognition particularly in children’s and youth theatre, as well as for his radio plays. He has penned more than forty radio plays; one of them was awarded the title of “Radio Play of the Decade” by Südwestfunk (SWF) in 1987.
To this day, Melchior Schedler works on new images every day. The exhibition pays tribute to an artist whose work uniquely combines theatre, literature and the visual arts.
