Blue is the colour of the sky, of longing, and, for Heinrich Campendonk, of the inward movement into the depths. Campendonk’s blue is embodied in: geese flying off into the distance, boats rocking on the water, blue figures, plants growing upwards, oil paintings, reverse-glass paintings and works on paper that have rarely or never been exhibited before – on display are works from his own collection. They all have one thing in common: the colour blue dominates.

In an unassuming, cornflower-blue school notebook, Campendonk recorded notes on his colour theory, ‘the mobility of colours’, around 1924 – a very special treasure. Colour played a central role for the Expressionist artist; it is the key to his work.

This exquisite special exhibition in the museum’s historic building complements the permanent exhibition and, moreover, opens up new perspectives on the works on display. The focus is on the largely unknown late work of Heinrich Campendonk. To mark the tenth anniversary of the Museum Penzberg – Campendonk Collection in its current form, we embark on a journey of discovery through the museum’s own collection.
