In November 1963, the Venetian artist Emilio Vedova moved to Berlin for eighteen months on a fellowship from the US-based Ford Foundation and worked in the former studio of the sculptor Arno Breker, now the Kunsthaus Dahlem. He engaged critically with the Nazi era and the country’s recent history, creating works that referred precisely to this context. Alongside works on paper, he produced his expansive ‘Plurimi’, which he first developed formally in models and which occupied him intensely. The artist group SPUR, which Lothar Fischer co-founded in 1957, was also interested in Vedova’s highly original, internationally acclaimed work.
